WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND ROLE OF EDUCATION-A REVIEW Dr. P. ThavithaThulasi

Assistant Professor, Dept. of Social work, Sri Padmavati Women’s University,Tirupati, A.P.

Abstract: Women empowered means mother India empowered”. When women who contribute almost half of the population are empowered, it will strengthen the national economy. Education is considered as a milestone for women empowerment because it enables them to respond to the challenges, to confront their traditional role and change their lives. Increasing access to education notwithstanding, gender discrimination persists in India and lot more needs to be done in the field of women's education in India. Women have so much unexplored potential, which has never been tapped. As education is both an input and input of human development, educational equity will ensure enabling and entrepreneurial development. Today, the female literacy levels according to the Literacy Rate 2011 census are 65.46% where the male literacy rate is over 80%. Even beyond literacy, education can do much for women’s rights, dignity and security. Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom for development. The researcher sees education, health care, and income as a blessed trinity because they are so closely related. This paper discusses the impact of education on empowerment of women as well as the challenges and changes that we must have to deal with during the process. This purely review paper depend up on secondary data Keywords: Development, Education, Empowerment, India, Women

 Introduction:

Education is a milestone of women empowerment because it enables them to respond to challenges, to confront their traditional role and change their life. Education is one of the ways to spread the message of women empowerment. However rich and humongous our country is no goals or dreams of our citizens will be achieved without effective education. Education not only educates a person but also helps her realize that she is a vital part to the society. Occupational achievement, self-awareness and satisfaction are among the many things that will be ensured by effective use of education. Guidance and counseling also provided through education, helps women select their jobs and build career paths. Education will help women to empower through the knowledge of science and technology to face the challenges of today’s technological age. It also helps them in garnering information through the computer all over the world. Education not only educates a woman but enables her to take decisions and accept responsibilities at her home and outer world. Education helps a woman to understand her rights to equal treatment like a man in the society of this nation. By development, we mean the development of all sections of the society and of course across gender. A society cannot progress much, leaving women (who constitutes almost half the section of the society), outside the process of development activities. Earlier development theorists had assumed that the process of development tickle down from top to bottom and thus would automatically bring about an improvement of all sections across all genders of the society and also reduce social and economic inequality. However, the experience shows that the rolling down process of development necessarily excludes some sections of the society (who are not allowed to take advantages of development) and thus raises the phenomenon of social exclusion. (Discrimination across gender is the most distressing fact of such deprivation cutting across caste, class and ethnic composition (De Hann, 1994). The gender discrimination is present in all societies, whether feudal or capitalist. In the context of human development in our society, empowerment of women and development of children has significant priority in all developmental efforts. Women and children together constitute about one-third of the total population (2011) of our country. There are always a number of components in the society, which are underprivileged of their basic rights in every society, state and nation, but these components lack in the awareness of their rights. If we enlist such components from the society, then women would top this list. In fact, women are the most important factor of every society. Even though everybody is aware of this fact, yet nobody is ready to accept this fact. As a result, the importance that used to be given to women is declining in today's society. As a significance of this growing tendency of underestimating women such as to make them occupy a secondary position in society and to deny them of their basic rights, the need for empowering women was felt. Today we enjoy the benefits of being citizens of a free nation, but we really need to think whether each of the citizens of our country is really free or enjoying freedom, in the true sense of the term. If we consider our country, each Indian citizen is given certain basic rights. The Structure of our nation does not discriminate between men and women, but our society has destitute women of certain basic rights, which were bestowed upon them by our Constitution. Due to such current situation, it was needed to make women free from all the fetters and to empower them aswell. This is nothing but empowerment of women.  Independent Era is not as per the expectations. We, as a nation, dream of becoming a SuperPower by 2020. For becoming a Super Power, each element of our society/ nation should contribute in the nation building process. However, women, who are a major factor of this society, are not literate then we cannot expect to become a Super Power. Therefore, it is urgent for us to know the importance of women's education, which would, in turn, give a motivation to the process of women's empowerment. This paper aim to create the awareness among the women’s about different empowerment and identifying the impact of education in women overall empowerment.

 Literature review

The term empowermenthas been overused, misused, and coopted (Stromquist, 2002; Stacki and Monkman, 2003). It is commonly deployed as a synonym for enabling, participating, and speaking out. The notion that education leads to women‟s empowerment has gained popularity, although we still have much to learn about how education actually empowers women (Stromquist, 2002; DaCosta, 2008; Murphy-Graham, 2008). Nevertheless, in the past 10 years, the goal of women’s empowerment (often linked with women‟seducation) has received serious attention, as well as funding by donors and international agencies (Unterhalter, 2007; Mosedale, 2005; Malhotra et al., 2002; Papart et al., 2002; Oxaaland Baden, 1997). Despite its widespread use and occasional abuse, there is some agreement (e.g. Kabeer, 1999; Malhotra et al., 2002; Mosedale, 2005) that empowerment:

 It is multidimensional process of change from a condition of disempowerment.

 Cannot be bestowed by a third party, as individuals are active agents in this process.

 Is shaped by the context, and so indicators of empowerment must be sensitive to the Context in which women live.

 Women Empowerment through Education

Women empowerment is the pivotal part in any society, state or country. It is a woman who plays a dominant role in the basic life of a child. Women are an important section of our society. Education as means of empowerment of women can bring about a positive attitudinal change. It is therefore, crucial for the socioeconomic and political progress of India. The Constitution of India empowers the state to adopt affirmative measures for prompting ways and means to empower women. Education significantly makes difference in the lives of women.3 Women Empowerment is a global issue and discussion on women political right are at the forefront of many formal and informal campaigns worldwide. The concept of women empowerment was introduced at the international women conference at NAROIBI in 1985. Education is milestone of women empowerment because it enables them to responds to the challenges, to confront their traditional role and change their life. Therefore, we cannot neglect the importance of education in reference to women empowerment. To see the development in women education India is supposed to upcoming super power of the world in recent years. The increasing change in women education, the empowerment of women has been recognized as the central issue in determining the status of women. For becoming super power, we have mostly to concentrate upon the women’s education.

Objectives:

1. To observe the empowerment of women in India and its impact

2. To study the role of education for women empowerment/development through review

ROLE OF HEALTH EDUCATION EMPOWERING WOMEN

Education Manumit-Education manumit the thinking, mind, thoughts, imagination, power, principle in various field for easy to survive and achieve knowledge through education .Empowerment of women brings equal status to women, opportunity and freedom to develop her which also means equipping women to be. Education makes the women’s self-sufficient in every aspect, she is not depends on her father, husband nor son neither brother.

Education stay away from hurdles-Education gives equal rights to women in socially, politically, culturally, gender, religiously manner. She will bring equal status with men and that is the reason to fostering both national and international integration.

Education allows taking Decision-As education opens ways to take decision according to their choice whether it is relates to life style, life partner, job, career, eating style, sexuality etc.Education teach to learn what is wrong and right .Education push to stay independtely on own feet.

Education Garner- Education will garnishing women to defense against crime, social devil, sexual harassment, marital rape and mental stress of society etc. Educated women contributes to economy- If women are qualified and helpful for family to earn money that means she able to develop the economy status of family and also for nation. Women can help, through their work; get rid of problems like India’s high maternal mortality rate, high rates of gender violence and other crime against women child sex abuse, female feticide, implement family planning and other schemes etc. Sharma (2016)

Education enhances- Education enhances the quality of women and makes some strategies to grow upward, to gear the entire education system to play positive interventionist role in the empowerment of women. To widen women’s access to vocational, technical and professional education at all levels, breaking gender stereotypes.Above six statement, proof that education play very vital role for empowering women.Paraphrasing a popular saying here educateda man and you will educated one person, educate a woman and you will educated a whole family would like to say that educated women educated more generation.Acquiring knowledge and understanding of gender relations and the ways in which these relations may be changed. Developing a sense of self-worth, a belief in one’s ability to secure desired changes and the right to control one’s life.Gaining the ability to generate choices exercise bargaining power. Developing the ability to organize and influence the direction of social change, to create a more just social and economic order, nationally and internationally. Thus, empowerment means a psychological sense of personal control or influence and a concern with actual social influence, political power and legal rights. It is a multi-level construct referring to individuals, organizations and community. It is an international, ongoing process centered in the local community, involving mutual respect, critical reflection, caring and group participation, through which people lacking an equal share of valued resources gain greater access to the control over these resources. Let’s see the difference in the literacy rate between men and women in given table are as under.

CONCLUSIONS

According to the Country Report of the Government of India, Empowerment meansmoving from a weak position to execute a power. Education of women in the education ofwomen is the mostpowerful tool of change of position in society. Education reduces the inequality and increase the status of women in her family and country where she works. Education motivate, guide and train in all level for improving and enhancing her qualities. Government providing various schemes for girls and women in her education like, free schooling, midday meal, hostels, cloth, bicycle, scholarships, train concession etc. education makes the women not only knowledgeable but very strong and powerful. Empowerment of a girl’s starts even enterprise makes empowerment operation The above study was carried out in Madurai, from the state of Tamilnadu, one of the fastdeveloping districts in the state. From the above findings, overall empowerment and otherrelated empowerment types are also relatively influenced by the respondents‟educationalqualification. Regression analysis shows that educational empowerment, political and psychological empowerments were the significant predictors for overall empowerment. Theprocess of empowering entails much more than awareness of alternative, women’s rights andthe nature of the requirements. With more education, women have greater access toemployment opportunities and increase the ability to secure their own economic resources. This study helps to create the awareness about empowering women among 13 revenue blocksof Madurai. During the data collection, most the respondents do not have any awareness about empowerment, even though they are educated. Since education is the primary avenue forempowerment and there are other dimension that is also have impact on empowerment.Present study suggest that General awareness programme should be taken among the womenof rural area to sensitizes them about the modern development of science and technology sothat they could give up superstitious believes and attitudes. Women of rural areas should betrained up in different vocational courses like handloom and textile, poultry farms, fishfarming, piggery, dairy farm, food and nutrition, fashion and designing, beauty parlor etc.Women reservation policy should strictly be maintained in all aspects like appointment ingovt. and semi govt. offices, admission in to the educational institutions, participating in thepolitics etc.

SUGGESTION
Awareness of girls education is essential whether girls from rural or urban .As per paraphrased “educated mothers educated family.” Change the system towards women based sex discrimination.and removal of gender inequality. Encourage the women actively participate in social and political issues.Spread the message that education of women is to build the strong women to create aincrediblecountry.Awareness needs to know the women are effectively good contributor of the socioeconomic development of the nation. Education plays important role to enhance the quality of women and women’s increase the quantity of knowledge that use in various fields where she survives. Motivate all girls and a woman belongs to rural areas and gives training to polishing their creativity. To make the women aware she should be encourage in every field. Through education entire girl child independent and free from their right and freedom.Arrange different kinds of training, workshop and courses for grooming of girls andwomen for enhancing self-esteem and self-confidence.Increase the confidence for developing ability to think critically. It is ensure that women respect is important in all fields and necessary. Whether women is in family or other work area. Every woman should have the liberty to live her life according to her choice. Give chance to select area according to their choice like education, employment etc. Change the mentality of the peoples who still neglects the women. The word empowerment is only used in books and papers as a flowery language but somewhere in the society; it is still not used practically and truly. This thinking ability we have to change from society
